Cornell at Princeton: Post Game

The Cornell football team posted their seventh loss in as many games this season after a 21-47 defeat against Princeton on Saturday. Princeton improved to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League while Cornell lost more ground in the conference going 0-4 in Ivy League play. Head coach David Archer’s team has had a nightmare season thus far and has been unable to get in the win column with just three games left in the season.

The Big Red offense played relatively well, putting up 444 total yards. Running back Luke Hagy was a major bright spot for the unit posting 128 rushing yards on 20 carries after struggling in the last couple of games due to an injury. He also had two catches for an additional 41 yards. Quarterback Robert Somborn had a solid game completing 22 of his 39 pass attempts for 229 yards and two touchdowns. However, he did throw an interception and took 4 sacks. His favorite receiver, as usual, was wide receiver Ben Rogers who had 6 catches for 96 yards and a touchdown. Rogers also added a 60-yard kick return to give the Big Red good starting field position, which led to a touchdown.

Cornell’s defense was the far inferior unit on Saturday, something that has been a common problem throughout the season. They have now given up 223 points in their last six contests, which is an average of over 37 points a game. The defense was able to keep Princeton’s passing game in check as quarterback Chad Kanoff had just 203 passing yards, but Cornell knew coming into the game that the Tigers are primarily a ground-and-pound offense and they were unable to stop the gameplan. Princeton racked up a devastating 261 yards on just 33 carries on the ground. Joe Rhattigan led the way with 127 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.

Cornell’s next game will be a Friday night matchup at Dartmouth on November 6 at 8 pm. The Big Green will be 6-1 coming into Friday’s game and is second in the Ivy League behind Harvard with a 3-1 record in the conference. While Cornell will finish with a losing record again, they will try to finish the season out on a strong note to avoid a winless season.
